Swedish Royal Navy Officer's Saber. Sweden. Second Half Of The 19th Century
A ceremonial saber for officers of the Royal Swedish Navy, made during the second half of the 19th century by the renowned armorer Jon Svengren in Eskilstuna. This piece is a remarkable example of a standard-issue bladed weapon for Swedish naval officers during the Historicist period, distinguished by the quality of its craftsmanship, the elegance of its proportions, and the richness of its decoration.
The saber features a slightly curved, single-edged blade of classic design, intended for both cutting and thrusting strokes. The brass hilt is fitted with a crossguard adorned with a finely chiseled floral relief design. The grip is wrapped in black leather and inlaid with twisted metal wires, ensuring an excellent grip. The saber is preserved with its original leather scabbard, fitted with brass fittings including the chape, the intermediate fitting with a suspension ring, and the scabbard tip.
The blade is engraved with an anchor and the royal coat of arms of Sweden, emblems traditionally reserved for the weapons of Royal Navy officers. This decorative motif underscores the high rank of its owner as well as his membership in the corps of naval officers. Weapons produced by Jon. Svengren in Eskilstuna enjoyed an exceptional reputation for the quality of their forging, the precision of their finish, and the excellence of their decoration, making these sabers highly sought-after items today among collectors of antique European weapons.
