Mahogany Table With Inlay Work In The Louis XV Style. Attributed To François Linke. France,

An elegant circular coffee table with one drawer, made in France in the late 19th century in the purest tradition of the Louis XV style. Given the quality of its craftsmanship, design, and decorative style, this piece is attributed to François Linke, one of the most prestigious Parisian cabinetmakers of the Belle Époque.

The frame is made of mahogany and covered with a carefully selected satinwood veneer, forming a parquet-style marquetry of remarkable finesse that brings the tabletop to life with an elegant geometric design. This is accentuated by a delicate molded brass rail that highlights the refined proportions of the piece.

The richness of its decoration lies in a remarkable set of finely chiseled and gilded bronze elements. The rim is adorned with a frieze featuring Dionysian motifs composed of vine tendrils, acanthus leaves, and garlands of foliage, executed with great virtuosity. The corners are adorned with powerful ram’s-head mascarons, an emblematic motif of the finest examples of French cabinetmaking from the second half of the 19th century. The elegant, curved cabriole legs rest on gilded bronze lion’s-paw feet, directly evoking the designs of 18th-century French royal furniture.

The excellence of the craftsmanship, the exceptional quality of the gilded bronzes, the elegance of the proportions, and the mastery of the marquetry allow this table to be considered a representative work of the greatest Parisian cabinetmaking houses of the historicist period. In terms of its stylistic characteristics, it bears a close resemblance to works attributed to François Linke and can be directly compared to examples that have appeared at auction at Christie’s and Sotheby’s.
