Silver Clown Figure. Vittorio Ancini, Italy, Arezzo, Second Half Of The 20th Century
Expressive silver cabinet figure depicting a clown, created by the Italian jewelry workshop Ancini in the second half of the 20th century. The sculpture depicts a comical character from the circus world dressed in a characteristic costume: cropped pants, a loose-fitting jacket adorned with large decorative buttons, and a wide bow tie embellished with polychrome enamel inlays. The character’s face is rendered in a grotesque, theatrical style with a deliberately exaggerated expression: a wide-open mouth, pronounced wrinkles, and a bright red nose—a traditional attribute of the circus clown.
The figure’s form conveys a dynamic stage gesture: the character leans slightly forward, arms outstretched, as if addressing the audience. The silver surface is carefully polished, creating a play of light on the folds of the costume and highlighting the sculptural form of the garment. Decorative enamel elements complete the composition: colorful inlays on the bow tie and buttons, as well as the contrasting red nose, reinforcing the figure’s theatrical character.
Stylistically, the work follows in the tradition of decorative cabinet sculpture produced by Italian silversmith workshops in the second half of the 20th century, which frequently drew inspiration from the popular themes of circus art and comic stage design. Such figures were intended for interior decoration and collecting, combining the craftsmanship of silverwork with expressive genre sculpture.
