Louis XIV Era Ebony Box With Its Guilloché Borders, Solid Silver Top Plate Lid & Keyhole
HAUTE EPOQUE
Nice early Louis XIV period (late 17th century) ebony carved (rather than blackened walnut? except for the back panel of the box which is in light wood, possibly poplar?) box , simply decorated with borders of finely guilloché moldings.
The lid features in its center a mould and chiseled solide silver large plaque (10.5*9 cm), just like on the front, a triangular-shaped solid silver matching keyhole surrounded by rich, abundant floral motifs.
Condition:
Its lock was replaced in the 18th century; key is missing. The 4 small turned wooden feet that raised the precious box are missing (these were sometimes even turned ivory to strongly contrast with the wood).
However, the box has retained its luxurious red silk interior lining, and the underside of the lid still has its latticework to hold correspondence in place. These crisscrossed ties are secured with a series of small silver nails with flower-shaped heads.
The top panel only has a few surface cracks, which add to the aesthetic of the box, but it isn’t split like it sometimes is.
The "wax polish" looks like a varnish that gives this display box its full shine. The black varnish also makes the two decorative metal plates stand out in a particularly striking way.
Dimensions:
28 cm length
* 19 cm width
* 7 cm thickness/depth
