16th Cty: Gothic Period Single Cast-iron Andiron With Coat Of Arms, Lion,... No. 2
HAUTE EPOQUE
16th century
Sturdy and massive cast-iron andiron from Gothic period
The andiron features rich ornamentation, from top to bottom:
*a grotesque head
*a sort of pilaster featuring an unidentified motif in relief (?)
*a fleur-de-lis
*a seated lion with a thick mane, in high relief !!!
The front of the base of the andestick directly references Gothic architecture, with a trefoil arch comparable to those found in churches, windows or doors of the period (these are similarly found in the carving of the chest fronts, the design of the stained-glass windows,...)
The sturdy rear leg is classically L-shaped. It bears various original inscriptions, including what could be a date (... 85 or 58 ...)
In the late Middle Ages, andirons could stand alone: in some paintings from this period, we see depictions of hearths with the central andirons serving as an axis for logs arranged on either side in a tent-like formation.
Dimensions:
52 cm high
25 cm wide
and 50 cm deep
Please check my announcement for an another Gothic period andiron—this one is also a standalone piece !
