First, it is worth noting its relatively rare format, as well as its subject matter, featuring a scene rendered as a miniature (our main reference, incidentally, measures exactly the same dimensions as our one)
The brass is very thick, and the offering dish is relatively heavy (408 g) given its small size (20.2 cm).
Condition:
3 small suspension holes around the edge
It should be noted that a hole in its center was formerly (in the 19th cty or earlier) plugged with a small brass disc soldered with tin, as can only be seen on the reverse. This is common on very early examples of this type of collection plate, either for hanging it or for attaching a carved wooden folk art figurine to serve as a handle (see my upcoming listings for an example)
Very nice overall patina
Dimensions
20.2 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm deep
Weight 408 g

This alms dish is part of a significant collection of similar dishes for sale, originating from two recently acquired collections (see the last photo)
Saint Matthew is traditionally depicted writing his Gospel under the inspiration of an angel, with the book as his attribute and, as a martyr, the halberd.
It is also a symbol of his courage in proclaiming the Gospel.
(The weapon of his martyrdom is, however, sometimes also a spear, an axe...)
"This Saint’s reputation is very great. It is due to his dual role as apostle and evangelist. Before joining Christ, who called him as the 12th apostle, he was a tax collector or customs officer and was named Levi. After the Master’s death, he is said to have preached the Gospel in Ethiopia. Legend is rife with miracles: he triumphs over sorcerers and their familiar dragons, resurrects the King’s son...
He is said to have suffered martyrdom, burned alive, stoned, or pierced by sword blows, according to the various versions proposed by hagiographers
