RELIGIOUS ART
Late 15th century nice bronze Christ figure
Stylistic analysis:
Several stylistic features of this item are characteristic from this specific period and particularly noticeable:
* the position of the legs, which are straight, and in particular the feet, which overlap at their tips,
* the arms are also positioned perfectly horizontally (and not in a V-shape),
* the very simple type of loincloth.
By all these criteria, this Christ figure stands out from more typical medieval productions.
Chiseling work adds a highly stylized and rustic element to
* the crown of thorns, and emphasizes Christ's face and expression, a mixture of suffering and resignation,
* his ribs amplifying his emaciated appearance, and his wounds.
The reverse is hollow. An axis still present at the back of his head suggests that he may have had a halo, now lost.
Dimensions:
15cm high *
16cm wide *
and approximately 2.5cm thick.
A beautiful example of a very classic type of popular bronze Christ from this period, late 15th century, touching in its simplicity, superb in its very beautiful patina and polish - the brass has acquired over time an almost golden color, linked to prolonged and daily handling over centuries.
