Gothic Period (late 15th Cty), Carved Blond Walnut Chest Panels With Tightly Linenfolds
HAUTE EPOQUE
Gothic Period (late 15th or early 16th century)
Superb and Gothic carved light blond walnut chest, with a tightly folded napkin motif. The front is composed of five panels, each repeating this same motif, the central panel being shorter due to the keyhole iron front plaque.
The understated, pure, and simple decoration of this stuff perfectly reflects the aesthetics of this period.
The chest's appeal lies particularly in its rare and perfect state of preservation:
*it has retained all its original hardware (mortise hinges, lock, and keyhole entry in escutheon shape)
*and, most importantly, its original base, bottom, and top or lid.
*The side panels, base, back of the chest, and top are each all carved from a single piece of wood.
The strong joinery between these elements gives a sense of robustness and perfect fit.
*Furthermore, and exceptionally, the piece shows no signs of woodworm. It has been waxed and now boasts a beautiful, light, lustrous walnut patina.
(It should be noted that the piece was originally raised on two supports/feeth below the chest. These have been replaced by two simple walnut crossbeams.) This base served, in particular, to protect the piece from dampness on the floor and from repeated daily washing.
A superb, authentic chest, perfectly preserved right down to its lid, which is particularly rare !
