Provence-Arles

Arlesian headdress ribbon made of “au sabre” velvet dating from the Louis-Philippe period. Looped silk velvet with a “sabre” finish, originating from a ribbon manufacturer in Saint-Étienne that supplied the Arles market in the 19th century. The design on a saffron-yellow background is typically Oriental in style, featuring a pattern of snowflowers with long pistils and plant branches adorned with Turkish crescents! The side borders feature crenellated loops. This type of ribbon, an essential accessory for the Arlesian headdress, was worn wrapped around the head over a white headdress, and sometimes arranged in a “giraffe” style, with two panels lifted upward to complement the volume of the so-called “gigot” sleeves. A few loose threads and slight color variations. In good condition. From an Arlesian family.
