Double-pointed Fashion Cashmere Shawl With Reserve In Cream Pashmina - France Circa 1830

Circa 1820-1840 France Beautiful square cashmere shawl from French fashion in wool woven on a handloom and dating from the Romantic period. Named Double-pointed because of the inversion of the fabric diagonally allowing the two points presented right side up on the back to be folded down. This is a long French shawl dating from the First Empire which was recut into a square during the Romantic period. The decoration composed of rows of inclined Boteh palms is an exact replica of Indian shawls from the end of the Mughal period. Very fine cut-toss weaving in blue, red and yellow with a tight and angular graphic called Broken Stick. Reserve added and sewn in cream pashmina and two spandrels at the corners. Tapered pashmina fringes on all four sides. The shawl is French but the double-point winding work was carried out in India, as evidenced by the cream pashmina, the embroidery on the fringes and the embroidered signature in reserve. A few rare tiny moth holes, otherwise clean and easy to handle. Good general condition of color and conservation. Dimensions: 174cm x 169cm.
