Large Art Nouveau Belt Buckle Featuring A Winged Animal With A Horn, Late 19th Century
Here is an extraordinary, imposing piece—a far cry from the usual Art Nouveau motifs of dreamy women with flowing hair and graceful butterflies!
This large belt buckle depicts an animal that resembles a cross between a bat and a moth.
It is made of carved horn, and its wings are adorned with a sheet of tortoiseshell engraved with veins.
The body, thorax, and eyes are adorned with cabochons of an unidentified material that was certainly once orange-tinted and is now a pinkish cream color.
The clasp on the back is made of copper or bronze with a brown patina.
The woman who wore it was certainly daring and must have attracted a lot of attention!
