Adrien Palisson (1841–?) Ruined House, Limoges, 1888. Limousin, Courtot, Dubouché Museum
Artist: Adrien Palisson ( 1841- ?)
A rare watercolor by Adrien Palisson depicting a house in ruins or under construction in Limoges on October 10, 18, notably thanks to grpace88, signed, located, and dated in the lower right corner.
Dimensions of the watercolor alone: 22x29 cm; 23.5x30.5 cm including the frame
Watercolor in very good original condition, in its period gilt frame, never removed from the frame
Authenticity guaranteed.
This is indeed a beautiful and rare watercolor by Adrien Palisson, who depicts an old neighborhood of Limoges in October 1888; depicting a typical Limousin house either being demolished or under construction, perhaps in the Abbessaille neighborhood or along the banks of the Vienne River....His technique is highly skilled yet natural, as watercolor was Palisson’s medium of choice.
Views of Limoges from the last quarter of the 19th century are quite rare; Palisson and Courtot are undoubtedly the two painters who produced the most of them.
Adrien Palisson was born in 1841; as a painter of Limousin architecture, he was featured in the “Blanc et Noir” exhibition in 1889, notably thanks to a charcoal drawing of the Pont Saint-Étienne neighborhood.
He is listed in Harambourg’s *Dictionary of 19th-Century French Landscape Painters* and in the catalog by Louvrier de Lajolais, *Paintings from the Adrien Dubouché National Museum, Limoges, 1903*, another notable figure from Limoges with whom Palisson was acquainted
Today, Palisson’s watercolors can be seen at the BAL in Limoges as well as in a beautiful 1997 exhibition catalog.
