This is therefore a very interesting oil on canvas by Gaston Balande due to its subject matter and its early date, as he depicts a scene of a shipwreck on Etaples Beach in 1909. Indeed, works from before 1910 are very rare on the market; during this period between 1909 and 1914—which is considered the painter’s first professional period—Balande primarily painted seascapes or harbor scenes in Etaples and the surrounding area. His brushwork is already highly refined and very personal, featuring broad areas of flat color; his palette is quite different from the one he would use later—browns and Sienna dominate—but Balande adds touches of bright colors such as reds, oranges, greens, etc.
This is therefore a most interesting work for fans of the painter or enthusiasts of the Etaples School.
I have several other works by Balande for sale; please check out my other listings.

Gaston Balande needs no introduction—he is one of the most famous French Post-Impressionist painters to have achieved worldwide success, best known for his views of La Rochelle, the Aunis region, and the islands of Ré and Oléron, but also for his early career in Etaples, though he also set up his easel throughout nearly all of France; he is also known for his Orientalist period, featuring views of North Africa, Greece, Spain, and more...and finally his genre scenes, portraits, and still lifes—in short, a versatile painter with a substantial body of work. He was close to many painters such as Marquet, Suire, and Bichet, and he was obviously part of the Charente School alongside the Couillauds, Verger, Langlade, Charlopeau, Chevalier, Charpentier, Lessieux, etc...
Finally, his son André DELAUZIÈRES (1904–1941) was also an excellent painter, though he unfortunately died young(be sure to check out the work I’m featuring in another listing)
The biography of Gaston Balande is so significant that I recommend you visit the website of the Association des Amis de Gaston Balande, which can be found here: https://gaston-balande.com/
There are currently two volumes of catalogs raisonné, with a third in the works, as well as several other publications...
His works are held in numerous museums in France and abroad
