Joseph Cloix, Known As Van Loix (1856-1915), 2 Studies. Marne School, Orientalist, Galien-laloue.
Artist: Joseph Cloix Dit Van Loix (1856-1915)
A new work by Joseph Cloix, this time an oil on panel depicting two landscape studies: the first, a winter scene by a pond, signed lower right, and the second, a landscape at the entrance to a village, most likely in the Marne region, also signed lower right. The painting alone, unframed, measures 35 x 27 cm, and 40 x 33 cm including the frame. I should also mention that both studies are on the same panel and both are signed. Of course, if the buyer is interested, it is possible to separate them into two paintings, as they prefer. As is his custom, Cloix employs his characteristic style with very precise drawing and, of course, his ever-delicate palette. Clearly, he is very much inspired by 19th-century painters and the Barbizon school. Jean Cloix is considered an Orientalist painter; I also have another work by this artist listed in a separate advertisement. But he also painted numerous landscapes in France, like the work I am presenting, particularly in the areas around Paris, Pontoise, and the Marne Valley, etc. In the past, I have owned some very fine views of these regions, in the style of Galien-Laloue. Indeed, his work is often compared to that of Galien-Laloue, the famous French painter who needs no introduction. Apart from that, little is known about this excellent French painter. Some of his works have achieved good results at auction, sometimes with high estimates between €4,000 and €6,000, especially for his Orientalist subjects. The painting is in perfect condition and comes framed in a modern, white-patinated wooden frame. The work is guaranteed authentic.
