Gustave Vidal (1895–1966) Fishermen In The Mediterranean. Provençal School, Avignon, Marseille, 1913
Artist: Gustave Vidal (1895-1966)
A beautiful new oil on panel by Gustave Vidal depicting fishermen on the Mediterranean coast, signed in the lower right corner and titled on the back, though I was unable to make out the title.
Dimensions of the painting alone, unframed: 27x35cm
In very good condition, recently cleaned; available either in its original frame or, for an additional €690, in a lovely modern Delf-style frame with a brown and gold patina.
Authenticity guaranteed.
I am therefore offering a new work by Gustave Vidal, a panel depicting Mediterranean fishermen by the sea; one can see a few boats and the coast in the distance. Of course, Vidal employs his characteristic brushwork—applied with a palette knife in an extremely rich medium—but conversely, he also plays extensively with the support using very little paint, leaving very subtle areas unpainted so that the wood and its grain are visible, a masterful blend that demonstrates the great talent of this outstanding Avignon painter.
A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon under the guidance of the painter Pierre Grivolas, who encouraged his students, including Gustave Vidal, to go paint outdoors. He was influenced by the New School of Avignon and abstract painters.
His distinctive style blends palette knife technique with pictorial stylization. He received numerous awards early in his career and exhibited worldwide.
Vidal’s contemporaries included Mattio, Pastour, Hurard (check out a work for sale in my other listings), Bernadac, and others...
