This is a new work by Jules Flandrin—a pastel created during one of his Italian trips; here, he depicts Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, Italy, in 1927. He naturally employs his usual, highly recognizable brushwork and a vivid, colorful palette. Flandrin enjoyed painting the ruins and remnants of Roman civilization, particularly in Rome but also in Tivoli, another city exceptionally rich in such sites.

Jules Léon Flandrin was a French painter and engraver, born on July 9, 1871, in Corenc, where he died on March 25, 1947

His partner was Jacqueline Marval, a famous painter from Lyon, and he married Henriette Deloras, with whom he had a son.
In his works, Flandrin sought purity of line and balance in composition.
His works are on display at the Musée de Grenoble, as well as in numerous French museums and in Tokyo, New York, and Luxembourg. Since 2015, the Musée Dauphinois has included the Autochromes from the Jules-Flandrin collection among its holdings
He is a member of the Académie du Bois Joli. An exhibition was held in November 2008 at the Musée de l’Ancien Évêché titled Jules Flandrin: A Sensitive Examination. Works from 1889 to 1914.

He is buried at the Saint-Roch Cemetery in Grenoble (Isère).
