This is a very fine post-impressionist composition by Raymond Enard, who here paints one of his favorite subjects, a flower-filled alleyway on the Ile de Ré, in my opinion in Ars, where the artist spent most of his time.
Of course, he uses his emblematic touch and palette, an extremely colorful palette that faithfully captures the light so typical of the Ile de Ré, notably through yellows, oranges, greens, vermilion reds, whites and blues.
Of Poitevin origin, Raymond ENARD was born on September 12, 1902 in LETRICOURT, Meurthe-et-Moselle, where his father had been appointed as a customs officer. He lived there for only a few years, as in 1906 his father was promoted to sub-brigadier and posted to Saint Martin de Ré, then to brigadier at ARS in May 1912.
A brilliant student, he continued his studies at the Collège BONPLAND, then at the École Normale d'instituteurs de La Rochelle (1919-1922), where his artistic gifts were such that the Director encouraged him to persevere in this path. He then entered the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He was appointed Professor of Drawing at the Lycée de LAON (1927), and a few years later became Curator of the city's museum.
A reserve captain in the 402nd Pioneer Regiment, he was seriously wounded on May 16, 1940 and taken prisoner.
Once peace returned, he worked at the Lycée CONDORCET.
In 1946, he was Professor at the Section du Paysage et de l'Art des jardins (annexed to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'horticulture de Versailles, of which he was a member of the Jury for the entrance examination), then in 1949 Professor at the Centre de préparation au professorat de dessin, of which he was appointed Director in 1961 and Honorary Director in 1964.
His artistic activity was of the same quality, so varied was the palette of his talent. A former member of the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon National des Indépendants, he is also a member of the Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture à l'Eau.
He exhibits in Laon, La Rochelle and Niort. Some of his works can be found in the museums of these three cities, as well as in the Hôtel de Ville in Lille and the Direction des Beaux Arts in Paris.
He is also an art critic for the weekly magazine "La vie du rail" and Deputy General Secretary of the Biennale de Menton.
His work is considerable: oil paintings of the Île de Ré or the.Marais Poitevin ,Watercolors of Ré,Provence,Venise,Wood engravings and since 1971... "chiffonneries".
Retiring, Raymond ENARD divided his time between ARS and MENTON, which he abandoned shortly after the death of his wife in 1971.
His favorite subjects were the Île de Ré, La Rochelle, the Île d'Oléron and the whole of the French Riviera.the entire Atlantic coast of Charente, as well as the Poitevin marshes.Poitevin, he also painted views of Provence and a few still lifes.still lifes.
