A STUNNING new work by Gaston Balande, an oil on canvas depicting the village of Lauzières in 1950, signed and dated in the lower right corner, with the title on the back.
Dimensions of the painting alone (unframed): 38x46 cm; 49.5x57.5 cm including the frame.
The canvas is in excellent original condition and comes in an antique frame with a period gray patina.

This is therefore a new work by Gaston Balande (see my other works for sale), this time an oil on canvas depicting the painter’s iconic village, Lauzières, where he lived and where his heirs still own his house and studio today. He painted this work in 1950, during the artist’s mature period, when he employed his famous brushwork with broad, flat areas of color and, of course, his characteristic warm and colorful palette, where shades of orange, ochres, yellows, and browns sit alongside greens, reds, and a superb blue. Of course, Balande painted Lauzières many times, but this village is so iconic that collectors often snap up these views; as a result, prices are often quite high—it is surely the most sought-after subject among art lovers, alongside views of the port of La Rochelle. Gaston Balande needs no introduction—he is one of the most famous French Post-Impressionist painters to have achieved worldwide success, best known for his views of La Rochelle, the Aunis region, and the islands of Ré and Oléron, but also for his early career in Etaples; he also set up his easel throughout nearly all of France. He is equally known for his Orientalist period, featuring views of North Africa, Greece, Spain, and more...and finally his genre scenes, portraits, and still lifes—in short, a versatile painter with a substantial body of work. He was close to many painters such as Marquet, Suire, and Bichet, and he was obviously part of the Charente School alongside the Couillauds, Verger, Langlade, Charlopeau, Chevalier, Charpentier, Lessieux, etc...
Finally, his son André DELAUZIÈRES (1904–1941) was also an excellent painter, though he unfortunately died young (be sure to check out the work I’m featuring in another listing)
