Object description :

"Gaston Balande (1880-1971) 2 Watercolors: Cliffs Of Lauzières And Aunis Estate. La Rochelle"
I am offering two more works by Gaston Balande, this time two watercolors. The first is a superb brown ink drawing depicting the coast and cliffs of Lauzières, signed in the lower right corner with the artist's studio stamp. A very beautiful and powerful work, in the style of Marquet, it is a fine study for a likely oil painting. The artist noted color names in places, as Balande would go on to paint numerous views of the cliffs of Lauzières where he lived. This watercolor measures 21 x 27 cm excluding the mat. In very good condition, it comes in a cardboard sleeve but unframed. The work is guaranteed authentic. Price of this ink drawing alone: €240 - The second is a watercolor depicting the entrance to a property in Aunis, near La Rochelle, signed in pencil in the lower left corner. A superb watercolor, typical of Balande's work, it begins as a stylized ink drawing, then undergoes a subtle coloring process that perfectly captures the light of the Charente region. This property, possibly a town hall given the French flag, should be identifiable. This watercolor, like the first, measures 21 x 27 cm. It is also in very good condition and comes in a cardboard sleeve, unframed. The artwork is guaranteed authentic. Price of this watercolor alone: €240. Or price for both watercolors: €390 (your choice). I hardly need to introduce Gaston Balande, one of the most famous French post-impressionist painters with worldwide success, especially renowned for his views of La Rochelle, Aunis, the islands of Ré and Oléron, but also for his period in Etaples at the beginning of his career, but he also set up his easel in almost all of France, also known for his orientalist period with his views of North Africa, Greece, Spain etc...finally his genre scenes, his portraits and his still lifes, in short a complete painter with a considerable body of work. He was close to many painters such as Marquet, Suire, and Bichet, and he is obviously part of the Charente school alongside Couillaud, Verger, Langlade, Charlopeau, Chevalier, Charpentier, Lessieux, etc. His son, André Delauzières (1904-1941), was also an excellent painter, who unfortunately died prematurely (see the work I am offering in another listing). Gaston Balande's biography is so extensive that I recommend visiting the website of the Association of Friends of Gaston Balande, which can be found here: https://gaston-balande.com/. There are two volumes of catalogue raisonné, and a third is in preparation, as well as several other publications. His works are held in numerous museums in France and abroad. P.S.: I am also offering a very beautiful oil painting by Gaston Balande; see my other listing.
