Alcide Le Beau (1873-1943) Marine~1905/06. Breton Fauve, Gauguin, Sérusier, Matisse, Japonisme.

Artist: Alcide Le Beau (1873-1943)
Here are the last 4 of 6 works by Alcide Le Beau, after the 2 oils offered for sale.

- This first is a watercolor depicting a Breton marine, circa 1905/1906, signed lower right.
Size of watercolor alone on view 30x43cm and 48x63cm frame included.
In very good condition despite being over 120 years old, delivered in a pretty natural wood counterpart rod.
Work guaranteed authentic

This work like the other 3 would have been exhibited at the Galerie Durand Ruel in 1911, the former owner gave me an extract from the catalog of the time.
As usual in this period, especially his works on paper, they are very often strongly influenced by Japonisme, for Le Beau was a great admirer of the Japanese masters, and this can be seen in his brushwork and even his coloring; Le Beau would even adopt a Japanese signature high up on the vast majority of his works.
On this one he paints the sea with great power in a brown/black wash and enhances the sky with pink and subtle touches of blue.

Le Beau is certainly one of my favorite painters, along with Léon Detroy, Charles Bichet and Gaston Thiesson. I've offered a few rare works in the past, but their scarcity means that I only have a dozen or so in some 25 years. Unfortunately, Le Beau hasn't been helped by certain experts who regularly refuse to sell works on the market, even though they are absolutely authentic, and often sublime and major works, so why ??? out of interest or incompetence ??? whatever the case, this is a great disservice to the painter...so friends collectors or owners, just because you own a work by Le Beau that has been refused doesn't mean it's a fake....I know of many examples, please don't hesitate to let me know...
Alcide Marie Le Beau was born on July 30 1873 in Lorient, some say in 1872, but apparently it was 1873. He died on August 12, 1943. He studied at the Jesuit College in Lorient. In 1890, he moved to Paris with his mother. Companion of painter Irène Reno (née Rena Hassenberg). In October 1912, he exhibited with his partner at Galerie La Boétie's Section d'Or. A painter of the Pont-Aven school, he has exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants since 1902. A painter of landscapes and genre scenes, Alcide Le Beau was self-taught and mastered both oil and watercolor techniques. He is a rare artist whose rapid, tormented brushstrokes and vibrant forms convey a lyricism all his own. His intimacy with nature is expressed sometimes in thick, brightly-colored matter, sometimes in smooth, washed-out colors and synthesized forms. Alcide Le Beau is particularly sensitive to the intellectualized vision of the Pont Aven masters who influenced his youth. He was part of the avant-garde alongside some of the greatest names of the Fauvist movement. A brilliant artist, he was recognized by the most far-sighted critics and dealers. In 1902, he exhibited at the Indépendants, then with Berthe Weill from 1903. He was part of the Cage aux fauves at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, along with Albert Marquet, Henri Matisse, Maurice Vlaminck and André Derain. The artist also took part in group shows at the Berthe Weill gallery in Paris in 1903-1904, with Raoul Dufy and Henri Matisse, then at the Durand-Ruel gallery in 1911. His reputation grew considerably, and he had numerous exhibitions in France and St. Petersburg. In 1906, an exhibition at Vollard definitively revealed his talent, propelling him to the forefront of the art scene. In 1907, the Druel gallery organized a retrospective of his Fauvist period, featuring some forty of his paintings. Alcide Le Beau succeeded in capturing atmospheres with a chromatic palette close to that of Gauguin and Van Gogh. For him, color merely serves as a support for a gradual, attenuated retranscription of the primary effect observed in Fauves. He sought a spiritual and expressive dimension in his works from 1906 to 1908, the peak of his art. It was during this period that he painted his landscapes of Corsica, as well as his vases; subjects taken from Wagner's operas.
