Artist: Roger Capron (1922-2006)
Important and quite rare ceramic vase in the shape of a diabolo or cone by Roger Capron, circa 1956. Height: 31cm, top diameter: 19cm, bottom diameter: 12cm. Good original condition; I note a tiny chip on the neck and a small chip on the base, that's all. No cracks or repairs, a minor firing flaw in the decoration. Vase guaranteed 200% authentic. This large diabolo vase features an abstract geometric decoration in oxide pencil, made up of more or less thin bands of black as well as other yellow lines. The interior of the vase is a glossy green. This decoration was created around 1956. Capron applied it to several shapes, and it varies in color, with either dominant yellow, blue, red, or green for the decoration, and the interiors also vary in the same colors, but always on a white background. I am showing you this same design, this time predominantly blue, on a red interior pitcher, reproduced in the catalogue "La céramique française des années 50" by Pierre Staudenmayer, page 95 (see last photo). Roger Capron, born in Vincennes on September 4, 1922, and died in Cannes on November 8, 2006, was a French ceramist. Initially interested in drawing, Roger Capron studied at the École des Arts Appliqués on rue Dupetit-Thouars in Paris from 1938 to 1943, before teaching drawing there from 1945. The discovery of ceramics led him to change mediums: on February 6, 1946, he settled in Vallauris, where he created a ceramics workshop, Callis. In doing so, he partnered with Robert Picault and then Jean Derval in 1948, thus participating in the revival of ceramics in Vallauris, where he put into practice the motto of his mentor, René Gabriel: "to make beauty accessible to all." In 1952, Capron bought a disused pottery workshop in Vallauris and began the production for which he is known. In 1955, Capron married Jacqueline Hubin, known as "Jacotte," who became his collaborator.
