Albert Gouget (1856–1948) Shepherd And His Flock, Sologne. Master Pastel Artist, Oléron, Camargue

This is a new pastel by Albert Gouget; here he paints a pastoral scene featuring an old shepherd in Sologne accompanied by his flock of sheep, a team of horses, and old dwellings in the distance. His technique is, as always, masterful, with great subtlety in his tonal rendering.
Little is known about Albert GOUGET, except that the painter—born in 1856 in Ismailia, Egypt, and who died in 1948 in Neuilly-sur-Seine—lived for many years in Marseille. A recognized master of the pastel technique in his day, he produced several color lithographs using this medium.
Exhibiting regularly in Paris and in major cities across southern France, he initially focused on landscapes of Provence, with a particular fondness for the Camargue. But he was also known to be very attached to the Île d’Oléron; he enjoyed painting the coasts of Brittany—particularly Carnac—and Normandy, as well as the countryside of the Beauce region.
Reading the press of the time, one can surmise that he was close to Action Française, a nationalist and royalist political movement deeply committed to patriotic causes.
