Brother Daniel De Montmollin, Taize, C. 1980. Ben Lisa, Girel, Bayle....

A superb spherical stoneware vase from Taizé, circa 1980–1985, it features a sublime design very typical of Brother de Montmollin’s work, with gray and blue glazes; the neck and base are chocolate brown, as are the superb incised patterns that form an abstract design all around the vase. This vase is signed only “Taizé,” but it is clear that this is not an ordinary piece produced for tourists or to support the community; rather, it is an artistic creation. Either this vase is indeed the work of Daniel de Montmollin but, like some others, was simply signed “Taizé,” or it is the work of one of Brother Daniel’s students—in which case the student has surpassed the master. It’s also possible that the “D” is not marked because an irregularity is visible...
It is in perfect original condition and therefore bears the sunken stamp.

Daniel de Montmollin needs no introduction—he was one of the most famous French ceramicists of the 1960–2000 period, alongside Roger Collet, Girel, Bayle, and Ben Lisa.
