Robert Génicot (1890-1981), Secondhand Dealer, Rue Saint-julien Le Pauvre, Paris, 1910. Lansyer, Lebourg
Artist: Robert Génicot (1890-1981)
A charming and very interesting oil on canvas by Robert Génicot depicting a secondhand dealer's shop on Rue Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre in Paris in August 1910, signed, located, and dated in the lower left corner. The canvas measures 30 x 21 cm (excluding the frame) and 39 x 30 cm (including the frame). This is a very beautiful and early painting by Robert Génicot, depicting a secondhand dealer's shop in Paris in August 1910, on Rue Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre in the 17th arrondissement. This painting is indeed quite rare, as Génicot was only 20 years old at the time, but his talent is already evident, as the composition is magnificent and very well constructed. A clear influence of Albert Lebourg is evident, particularly in his later paintings in Algeria; indeed, this may have been a premonition, as Génicot would go on to make his mark primarily through his Orientalist compositions. I also found a very similar work painted in 1886 by Emmanuel Lansyer, a canvas listed in the Carnavalet Museum (see last photo). Robert Génicot (1890-1981), a student of Ernest Laurent, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris and won a silver medal in 1925. He received a scholarship for the Prix du Maroc in 1927 and a gold medal at the 1937 International Exposition. He also exhibited at the Salon de la Société Coloniale des Artistes Français. His views of Morocco were appreciated by local figures. His oeuvre includes a few works of Paris, but I haven't found any as early as the one I'm offering. This canvas is in very good original condition, with only very, very slight stretching. It comes in a lovely antique gilt frame. The work is guaranteed authentic.
