Artist: Adolphe Marie Beaufrère (1876-1960)
A sublime oil on panel by Adolphe Beaufrère depicting a Breton landscape, signed lower right and titled on the back "Road and pastures between Plouay and Restavy." The painting measures 47 x 41 cm without the frame and 65 x 59 cm with the frame. This is a magnificent post-impressionist composition by Adolphe Beaufrère, which I believe was created around 1943-1948. He employs a very powerful brushstroke, somewhere between Fauvism, Pointillism, and Nabi, as well as a vibrant and colorful palette dominated by soft greens, blues, yellows, and oranges. He paints a place he depicted several times: inland Brittany between Plouay and Restavy. As is often the case, he includes a figure or an animal in his composition, in this case, a cow in a pasture. Looking at his past sales, we find several works located in Plouay, a small village 40 km from Pont-Aven and 20 km from... from Quimperlé, which the painter must have appreciated. This is a large-format painting for Beaufrère, who was often accustomed to smaller formats. Adolphe Marie Beaufrère, a major and essential Breton painter, needs no introduction. He is listed among the Pont-Aven painters, but is also known for his views of the South of France, especially Cassis, and his scenes of Algeria. His painting is influenced by his peers of the Pont-Aven school, Gauguin, Sérusier, Bernard... but Beaufrère adds a very personal touch: pointillism, cloisonnism; he was also a very talented engraver, which also influenced his painting. Adolphe Beaufrère, born on March 24, 1876, in Quimperlé (Finistère) and died on February 16, 1960, in Larmor-Plage (Morbihan), was a French painter and engraver. A large part of his work is inspired by Brittany. Adolphe Beaufrère entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he studied under Gustave Moreau and then Fernand Cormon. Besides painting, he was particularly interested in engraving. He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1898. In 1911, a grant enabled him to travel to Algeria—where he stayed at the Villa Abd-el-Tif—Italy, and Spain. During the First World War, he served in the infantry. He settled permanently in Larmor-Plage in 1922. Beaufrère primarily used etching and drypoint, while also producing some wood engravings. In 1949, he illustrated Maurice Genevoix's Forêt Voisine. He contributed to the book Almanach, cahier de vers by Émile Verhaeren (Société de Saint-Éloy, 1951). He also participated in Ernest de Ganay's Châteaux d'Île-de-France series (Société de Saint-Éloy, 1951). 1957) and to Vieilles Abbayes d'Île-de-France by Louis Réau (Société de Saint-Éloy, 1955). This painting on panel is in perfect original condition, delivered in a very beautiful modern frame of carved and gilded wood. The work is guaranteed authentic.
