"André Verger (1912-1990) Buoys At La Rochelle C. 1950. Balande, Suire, Marquet, Charente, Ré..."
Superb oil on canvas by André Verger signed lower right, titled on the back Les bouées, La Rochelle, circa 1950. Size of the painting alone 46x61cm and 54x69cm including frame. This is therefore a magnificent post-impressionist composition with a Fauvist tendency by André Verger who paints here buoys in LA Rochelle, surely in a corner of the port, we can also see a character. Painting very probably early by its touch and its signature which will change later; at this period Verger is apparently very influenced by Gaston Balande and Albert Marquet, both also attached to La Rochelle; indeed we can see here a powerful and very stylized touch by large flat areas, as used by Balande and Marquet. After this period his palette will change towards softer shades and he will stylize his subjects even more and he will only sign Verger tout court. André Verger is a painter affiliated with the Charentaise school, after having studied Fine Arts in Paris, he headed towards his heart region, the Charente Maritime which he would paint from end to end passing through La Rochelle of course, but also the island of Ré, the island of Oléron, Royan, Fouras, Rochefort, etc, etc... just like many other painters of the Charentaise school that he would rub shoulders with for the most part such as Boucart, Suire, Enard, Langlade, Charlopeau etc... Today we can see his works in several museums such as La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Saintes.... This canvas is in perfect original condition, delivered in its period frame. Work guaranteed authentic
