Flamed Stoneware Covered Pot Signed By Gilbert Méténier - Gannat - Art Deco (circa 1925–1935)
A very elegant glazed stoneware covered jar by Gilbert Méténier, made in Gannat, Allier, circa 1925–1935.
It features a remarkable glaze with running and crystallization effects, combining a deep Gannat blue with shades of ochre, beige, brown, and green.
The lid, which is particularly intricately crafted, features a relief decoration with radiating lines that harmoniously extends the glaze effects of the body.
The firing has created beautiful textural effects, with variations in the glaze characteristic of the Méténier workshop’s experimental work. The signature “G. Méténier” on the base confirms its attribution.
Gilbert Méténier took over the family workshop in Gannat in 1920 and went on to develop a line of artistic stoneware renowned for its original glazes, often referred to as “Gannat blues.”
