"christ Vivo," Attributed To César Bagard, In Its Gilded Carved Frame. Louis XIV Period, Late 17th Century

The Living Christ (Christus vivo), attributed to César Bagard (1620–1709), carved from wood known as “Sainte-Lucie,” presented in its original carved and gilded wooden frame. Louis XIV period, late 17th century.

Originating from the private chapel of a château in Haute-Saône, this ensemble is distinguished by the remarkable quality of its carving and the particularly sensitive expression of Christ. These stylistic characteristics allow it to be reasonably attributed to the workshop of the master César Bagard (1620–1709), a major figure in Lorraine sculpture who was active in Nancy during the second half of the 17th century.

The remarkable state of preservation of this ensemble is due to its having remained continuously in the chapel where it was originally installed, thus preserving its integrity and its original patina.
