Revernay – Large Egg-shaped Glazed Stoneware Vase, Circa 1920
A large ovoid stoneware vase produced by the Revernay workshops at the Digoin Manufactory during the Art Deco period.
Resting on a foot, the vase features a broad, ovoid body topped by a short, truncated conical neck accented by a groove. The entire surface is enlivened by a rich, stylized floral design, punctuated by geometric friezes.
The glazes offer a particularly decorative palette blending pinkish beige, brown, green, deep blue, and bluish gray. The large flowers, rendered in a synthetic style, stand out against a dense background where glaze runs and firing variations lend the surface a beautiful depth.
The underside bears an engraved mark:
“Revernay – 142-B – 59”
The numbers correspond to the shape and decoration references used by the factory; the number “59” should therefore not be interpreted as the year 1959.
This model is documented: a comparable example is held in the collections of the Sarreguemines Museum and reproduced in the book L’Art dans l’industrie – The Stoneware of Revernay, 1896–1930, Manufacture de Digoin, published in 2004 by Les Amis des Musées et des Arts de Sarreguemines, page 20.
