Chinese Altar Made Of Carved Wood, Polychrome And Gilded
A small Chinese Taoist home altar or votive throne, carved from wood, openwork, lacquered red, and accented with gilding. The structure takes the form of a miniature throne richly decorated with dragons, mythical birds, plant motifs, and guardian lions. It houses a removable tablet bearing several religious inscriptions in Chinese characters.
The main inscription reads “齊天大聖” — Qitian Dasheng, “the Great Sage Equal to Heaven,” the traditional title of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. The other inscriptions appear to invoke various masters, protective deities, and figures associated with prosperity.
In its original condition, with wear to the polychrome paint and gilding, and minor losses. The original patina has been preserved.
