Japan, early 20th century, a very beautiful polychrome wood and plaster statue with gilding depicting the monk Nichiren Shonin (1222-1282), founder of Nichiren Shu, one of the major schools of Mahayana Buddhism, during the Kamakura period. The Master is shown in full ceremonial robes, seated on a raised throne. He holds a scroll in his left hand and a scepter in his right. The eyes are made of glass. Gilded brass decorations adorn the base of the throne. In good condition, with only a few minor chips. The colors are remarkably fresh. Dimensions: Height 20.5 x Width 17 cm.
