Italy, 18th century, very pretty bronze statue on a marble base depicting a man carrying a wicker basket. The character is typical of ancient representations of men from southern Italy. Good quality workmanship and cast iron. An almost identical copy was offered during a cataloged sale at the Hôtel Drouot on June 23, 2021 on an estimate of 1500 – 2000 euros without auction fees. The blurb also mentions a similar sculpture sold by Sotheby's in 1990. Another is present in the works of the Wallace Collection.
Height 22 cm (total height with base 32.8 cm). The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a brand known to everyone.
Good condition except for a small cast iron defect visible on the top of the character's headdress; some wear and micro-missing on the base, all without affecting the beautiful aesthetics.
