India, 19th century, a very beautiful and unusual bronze hanging altar dedicated to the elephant goddess Lakshmi, also known as Gajalakshmi, wife of Vishnu, goddess of happiness, prosperity, wealth, and abundance. Lakshmi, seated in the lotus position, is surrounded by two elephants bathing her with water from their trunks. This iconography, which appears very early (6th century BCE), can be seen on very ancient Indian temples, coins, etc. It is in good condition, with only slight wear consistent with its age and which does not detract from its aesthetic appeal.
