Ivory Coast, Gouro people, 1940s/1950s, superb and old "Gu" dance mask in hard wood depicting an elegant elongated female face with fine features. The eyebrow arches in slight relief extend into a long, thin nose and a mouth revealing two rows of filed teeth as was the custom among Gouro women before the 1920s. This mask representing a beautiful woman (mother or daughter) is linked to the zamble male mask (husband or father), without which she does not is never exhibited outside the sacred wood. Beautiful dark brown lacquered patina.Height 41 cm (51.5 cm with the base). The scale indicator on the last photograph is a small model of a brand lighter known to all.
Good condition except for slight normal wear and tear without impact.
