Indonesia, Celebes Islands, a remarkable and rare votive sculpturein bronze depicting a babirussa, an emblematic and endemic animal ofcertain islands in the Indonesian archipelago. Originally, this bronze was offered to a deity in an ancient sanctuary to implore a blessing or to give thanks for a fulfilled wish.
The babirusa is a mammal of the Suidae family, endemic to certain islands in Indonesia (notably Sulawesi). It has long upper canines that grow upward through the snout and curve dramatically toward the forehead.
Good condition, with normal wear that does not detract from the piece’s beauty.
