Kirman Display Rug, 46 X 60 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool And Silk, 1880–1900, Qajar Dynasty

With its classic design, this piece is the epitome of the naturalistic style found in Kirman rugs.
Floral Kirman or Kerman rug, Iran, circa 1880–1900, made of wool and silk, hand-knotted.
It measures 48 cm wide by 46 cm long, with a density of approximately 650,000 knots per square meter.
The fringes bring the rug’s total length to 60 cm (23").

These are showcase rugs offered by rug dealers to demonstrate the quality that Iranian workshops were capable of producing.

Our piece is in very good condition

Although they originate from the Iranian city of Kerman—a major production region after which these carpets are named—no piece today is more than 150 years old.
In fact, carpet weaving did not begin in this region until around 1880.
Our piece, although showing signs of normal wear, is nonetheless a sublime artifact of Qajar culture and the artistry of these Kirman carpets.

# Kirman carpets often feature floral designs and usually have a medallion that stands out against a solid-color background.
In these designs, the medallion motifs are repeated in the border and the four spandrels (corners).
Some of these rugs also feature large animal scenes.

Our rug originates from the city of Kirman and features a magnificent design of numerous bouquets and interlacing patterns, of great delicacy and beauty.

Kerman is the largest city in southeastern Iran and is the capital of the province of the same name.
The reputation of Kerman carpets and ravers stems from the excellence of the “Ostads,” these incredibly skilled carpet designers who have preserved the traditional spirit of these great Persian carpets.
The deep harmony of the colors results from a perfect balance that attests to the great creativity of the artisans of Kerman.
The finest carpets are the most admirable and beautiful; the higher the knot count, the finer the carpet, and the more sought after it is by enthusiasts and collectors.

## Some Kirman rugs are known as “Laver,” a corruption of “Raver,” a town near Kirman where rugs are knotted with great care.
Antique Laver rugs are characterized by a large, multi-lobed medallion—roughly oval or rhomboidal—on an ivory background (our model), or a design featuring vases arranged in tiers.
Both types of rugs are extremely rare today and possess a delicate color palette characteristic of antique Kirman rugs.

The Qajar Dynasty (Qājār, Qadjar, Qajar; Persian: قاجار)
was a Turkmen dynasty that ruled Iran from 1786 to 1925.

This piece is in excellent condition for its age, has not been restored, and has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
