Vintage American Union Case Camera Case With Military Motifs And A Portrait Of La Fayette

A remarkable antique American thermoplastic camera case, commonly known as a “Union Case” or gutta-percha case, dating from approximately 1855–1865.

Both exterior sides feature the same finely molded military relief design. The scene depicts officers in a camp, accompanied by soldiers and a horse, all surrounded by a rich floral border. The case has brass hinges and two clasps.

The interior contains an engraved portrait of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette (1757–1834), a French officer who played an important role during the American War of Independence. He wears the eagle-shaped insignia of the Society of the Cincinnati on his chest. This engraving was likely added later and features a few details that have been slightly enhanced with color.

The opposite side is lined with antique burgundy red velvet adorned with a central decorative motif. Originally, this case likely contained a daguerreotype, an ambrotype, or an antique ferrotype.

The item is in good vintage condition, with normal signs of age and use, some localized wear, and minor imperfections. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they are an integral part of the description.
