Commemorative medal in solid silver, created to mark the 25th centenary of the founding of Marseille (circa 1898-1900), engraved by A. Patey.
The obverse illustrates the traditional scene of the founding of Massalia: the meeting between the Greek navigator Protis and the Ligurian princess Gyptis, a founding episode recounted by ancient authors, symbolizing the alliance at the origin of the Phocaean city circa 600 BC.C.
The reverse features a view of the port of Marseille, accompanied by the city's coat of arms and the motto "Actibus immensis urbs fulget Massiliensis". The lower part mentions the "XXV Centenary" in Roman numerals.
This medal was part of the great festivities organized in Marseille in 1899 to celebrate the city's 2500th anniversary, an event marked by official ceremonies, publications and the issue of commemorative medals.
