Indian Fabric With Rose Motifs And Rural Scenes, Late 18th Century, 266 X 181 Cm
A rare and elegant large printed cotton canvas known as an “Indienne”, created in the late 18th century, featuring a remarkable polychrome design in shades of madder red, bluish gray, and beige on an ivory background.
This expansive tapestry is organized around a network of diagonal garlands punctuated by large, fully bloomed roses. Amid these interlacing patterns unfold charming pastoral and rural scenes, inspired by 18th-century European taste, combining figures, garden ornaments, flowering trees, and stylized landscape elements.
The whole is framed by a wide border richly adorned with floral motifs, bouquets, foliage, and decorative medallions characteristic of Indian prints intended for furnishings. The delicacy of the design, the balance of the composition, and the softness of the color palette attest to the quality of this block print.
The exceptional dimensions of this piece make it suitable for use as wall hanging, decorative panel, or as a collector’s item dedicated to antique textiles.
In generally good condition for a fabric over two centuries old. Some signs of use, slight discoloration at the bottom, and minor wear and tears consistent with its age, without detracting from the remarkable decorative effect of the piece, which is complete (a rarity!).
