Antique Wall-mounted Crucifix In Bronze And Gilded Wood, Baroque Style, 18th Century

Artist: école Française Du 18ᵉ Siècle Régence

A wall-mounted crucifix combining a patinated bronze Christ with a carved, openwork, and gilded wooden panel featuring rich Baroque-inspired ornamentation.

At the center of the composition, the dark bronze Christ is depicted with his arms raised, his head slightly tilted, and his body extended. A separate circular halo frames his head. The metal’s patina, with its dark brown and greenish hues, contrasts with the warm tones of the gilding.

The wooden panel features an architectural composition organized around a cross integrated into the design. Vegetative scrolls, stylized foliage, and symmetrically arranged floral motifs frame the Crucified Christ. In the upper section, a curved pediment features an ornament in the shape of a cartouche with volutes. The lower section features an architectural depiction evoking a fortified enclosure, possibly a reference to Jerusalem.

The work as a whole reflects a decorative style characteristic of Baroque religious art, in which the richness of the gilding highlights the dark figure of Christ. The juxtaposition of bronze and gilded wood gives this devotional object a unique presence.

With its modest dimensions and hanging mechanism on the reverse, this crucifix was intended to be mounted on a wall, in a private home or a place of prayer.
