A rare and captivating ancient icon of the Virgin and Child, painted in tempera on a wooden panel and enhanced with a precious gold background. This work is part of the refined output of the Cretan workshops under Venetian rule in the late 15th century, a period during which Cretan masters distributed their icons throughout the Mediterranean basin.

The composition follows the famous iconographic type of the Virgin of Tenderness (Eleousa), one of the most moving depictions in Byzantine art. The faces of the Mother and the Child touch in a gesture of intimacy that evokes both maternal love and a foreshadowing of Christ’s Passion.

This painting reveals the distinctive characteristics of the Italo-Cretan school: precise drawing, delicate modeling achieved through fine highlights, luminous skin tones, drapery in deep reds, and a vibrant gold background. The work as a whole bears witness to this exceptional convergence of Byzantine tradition and Western influences developed in the workshops of Candia (present-day Heraklion).

Despite its intimate format, intended for private devotion, the work possesses a remarkable monumental presence. The gentleness of the expressions, the quality of the drawing, and the elegance of the pictorial treatment are reminiscent of several works preserved in the collections of the Byzantine Museum of Athens, the Museo Correr in Venice, and the Historical Museum of Crete.
