Polychrome Carved Wooden "virgin And Child With Crown," Romanesque Style, H. 40 Cm
A carved and polychrome wooden sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary, crowned and seated in majesty, holding the Baby Jesus, who is also crowned.
The composition exhibits an archaic aesthetic, characterized by the frontal orientation of the figures, the stylized rendering of the faces, and the pronounced relief of the drapery. The Virgin holds an attribute in her right hand, while the Child holds a globe.
The sculpture retains traces of polychrome in shades of red, ochre, white, and blue-green, the wear of which contributes to its antique appearance and expressive character.
The reverse side has been left with a rustic finish. The piece as a whole shows significant wear, loss of polychromy, missing sections, and alterations to the wood, as visible in the photographs.
A Romanesque-inspired work of indeterminate date, reminiscent of the tradition of “Virgins in Majesty” in medieval sacred art.
