C17th/c18th Dutch Pierced Coquilla Nut Spice Holder/box
A 17th or 18th-century Dutch pierced coquilla nut spice holder, the top half of the screw-thread-joined pierced body surmounted with a bust of a man, both halves elaborately carved with musician cherubs, instruments, and foliate scrollwork, on a circular spreading foot. 18 cm (7.1 in) highCondition: Minor loss to foliate scrollwork of upper half of pierced body (see images). Also on the upper half, very small residue of adhesive flares faintly under ultraviolet light, indicating a minor repair. There is a slight lean when placed on a flat surface. Otherwise, there is minor wear commensurate with age.
