Notes: Why “Attributed to”? In our opinion, it is incumbent on art dealers who value their reputation to be sure, beyond a reasonable doubt, that what they sell is what they say it is. This is why we give a permanent, open-ended guarantee of authenticity for all our items. In this case, we have no previous experience of this artist and no provenance for the painting. However, in its favour:
- The artist regularly painted twilight river scenes in a style comparable to this painting.
- The signature is similar to those on other paintings of theirs, although perhaps a little loose by comparison. It is underneath the varnish layer and does not fluoresce under ultraviolet light.
- There is a Lefranc et Cie (Parisian art supply company) label on the stretchers, correct for the size of canvas, with a logo used from 1880. However, we were unable to find any records to date when the label was no longer used.
- The drawing pins (punaises) fixing the canvas to the stretcher are marked S.G.D.G. "Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement", dating their manufacture to pre-1968.
- There is a patched repair to the canvas (see condition information) and the associated retouching fluoresces under ultraviolet light against the older original paint.
Condition: Very good, clean, ready to hang. There is a patch repair in the upper right corner of the painting, with associated retouching visible under ultraviolet light (see images). The painting is not tacked or nailed to the frame, but is not loose in the rebate.
