Romanesque Carved Stone Element
A carved stone architectural element, likely from the Romanesque period. It is probably a modillion, a corbel, or a portal element from a religious building. The sculpture appears to depict a fantastical, monstrous creature that is part human, part animal. The human head is depicted here with disproportionately large eyes. The body’s posture is inspired by that of an amphibian (a toad?), but with what appear to be folded wings. One of the legs ends in a webbed foot. This architectural element was carved from coarse-grained limestone, such as that found in Saintonge or the Bordeaux region. The stone is quite weathered, and its patina is consistent with its age.
