Standing Virgin In Stone – Central Italy, Between The End Of The 14th And The Beginning Of The

Artist: -
A limestone sculpture depicting the standing Madonna, attributed to central Italy, dating to around the 14th century.

The Virgin is depicted frontally, with a long veil framing her face and a royal crown (partially missing), her hands open in a gesture of welcome and intercession. The serene and idealized face features stylized features typical of archaic Gothic sculpture, with almond-shaped eyes and a thin mouth. The drapery, punctuated by regular, vertical folds, gives the figure a solemn stillness, still tied to late Romanesque models.

The work displays evident manual workmanship, particularly on the back, and retains an antique patina consistent with its period. The wear, small gaps, and widespread abrasions are consistent with its age and a likely original placement in an ecclesiastical devotional context.
