L’amour Courtois, Grand Tondo Sculpté En Albâtre En Fort Relief Du XIXème Siècle.
SCULPTED ALBASTRE TONDO DEPICTING COURTLY LOVE, 19TH CENTURY
Courtly Love, 19th-Century Alabaster Tondo.
A very beautiful carved alabaster tondo from the Napoleon III era, riding the "troubadour" trend.
It draws on the famous depictions of courtly love from the Middle Ages.
The high-relief sculpture is of very fine quality, featuring a superb patina.
The stone has a beautiful ivory color.
The scene depicts a young squire courting his beloved while riding through the woods, likely during a hunt. Rabbits frolic at the horses’ feet, and servants follow the couple.
The piece is very beautifully carved and exudes a charming atmosphere.
The tondo is very thick, and the alabaster is in very good condition; it has not been broken or restored. The cracks you see in the photos are the stone’s natural veins.
This tondo thus revisits a famous medieval theme, reflecting the revival of the Gothic style that was very much in vogue under Napoleon III at a time when Viollet-Le-Duc was restoring numerous High Middle Ages monuments in France.
A beautiful, high-quality carved tondo that is very decorative.
Dimensions:
26.5 cm in diameter and 3.5 cm thick.
