Saint Joseph With The Flowered Staff, Beautiful 17th-century Walnut Panel
Beautiful Early 17th-Century Bas-Relief Panel: Saint Joseph with a Flowering Staff "
Rare Saint Joseph with a Flowering Staff, 17th-Century Walnut Bas-Relief.
A rare and very beautiful bas-relief depiction of Saint Joseph with a Flowering Staff, set within an architectural arcade.
It is likely a beautiful element of an altarpiece crafted from walnut, from a 17th-century Burgundian or Flemish school.
This panel is superb, and the walnut’s patina is wonderfully preserved.
The grain of the walnut is remarkable and gives the sculpture a delicacy and velvety texture that the photos cannot fully capture.
If you look at the panel from an angle on the left, Joseph’s face appears almost in its entirety.
The staff is almost detached from the base, and the drapery is sublime.
Take a close look at the face, as well as the numerous details—the carving is remarkable.
The panel is made of two thick, original walnut planks.
Note the original square piece in the upper right corner, corresponding to a knot in the walnut that broke off during the carving process.
A wonderful early-period Saint Joseph.
Dimensions:
63 cm high by 32 cm wide; note that it is approximately 3 cm at its thickest point.
