Anthropomorphic Snuff Box Made Of Walnut, With A Foot Wearing A Sandal - Early 19th Century

A rare and remarkable anthropomorphic snuffbox dating from the early 19th century, carved in the shape of a foot wearing a sandal.

While antique snuff boxes depicting shoes or boots are occasionally found, this model stands out for its naturalistic and particularly original design. The foot is carved with great finesse: the delicately curved ankle, the individually defined toes, and the straps of the sandal come together to form an object that is as elegant as it is unusual.

The snuffbox is crafted from carved walnut, featuring a superb deep, warm brown patina. The sandal, highlighted by blackened wood, contrasts harmoniously with the parts left in the walnut’s natural color. The nails of the five toes are delicately inlaid with bone.

The oval lid, which fits perfectly, is adorned with a diamond-shaped bone inlay, in the center of which sits a small brass grip ring. It opens easily and functions perfectly.

The quality of the carving, the refinement of the inlays, and the originality of the subject make this snuffbox a remarkable collector’s item, ideal for a cabinet of curiosities.
