18th-century Italian Worship Furniture Made Of Walnut

Early 18th-Century Italian Walnut Oratory Cabinet.
A charming Italian piece designed as an oratory cabinet.
A typical piece found in Italian palaces and beautiful Italian mansions.
Still in the spirit of the High Baroque period, this small piece dates from the early 18th century.
Although its design is rather rustic, it is nonetheless highly decorative.
The walnut is superb, with a warm, golden hue and a beautiful waxed patina.
Trapezoidal in shape, it consists of a main body that opens via a drawer and a door, both molded on the front.
The top, made from a single piece of walnut with a “beak of a corbin” molding, sits atop a frieze of serrated pilasters and crowns the main body.
That is to say, the drawer is molded and adorned with a wooden pull knob, featuring a typically Italian interior fit—which, incidentally, is made of fir.
The drawer sits atop a beautiful walnut ingot-shaped panel, which in turn sits above the section featuring the molded door, adorned in the center with a walnut pull knob.
In a geometric style, there are molded recesses on either side of this door.
The main body rests on a molded storage compartment that opens via a flap.
A low molding completes the ensemble.
This piece rests on two clogs at the front, in the style of a “cassone.”
The rear legs are slightly recessed.
The shelf is made of fir, as are the interior of the drawer and the back panels of the piece, all of which are original.
No major restoration work to report—only routine wear and maintenance, as well as a preventive treatment with xylophene, even though this piece shows no signs of insect damage.
A high-quality walnut piece, very decorative in the spirit of the High Renaissance.
